Profile Your Clients for a Strong Social Media Strategy

When it comes to social media, knowing your audience is important!

One way to ensure that the content you are pushing out will be relevant to your audience is to create a customer profile -- or three.  However, remember that customer profiles will vary depending upon on your business and clients.

Some of my clients have asked me what exactly is a customer profile?  Well, in essence, a customer profile looks at your target audience and creates a profile based around the majority of the people who are purchasing your products.  You can even ask some of your best clients to complete a profile (anonymously or not), giving you an in-depth look at why they support your business.  Be sure to thank them for this!

Sometimes your business might need to create multiple profiles that target the different “seasons” of your customers life.  This means a customer profile might include a stay-at-home mom who is in the deep trenches of raising toddlers, a working parent whose evenings are busy with running his middle school pre-teen around to extracurricular activities, or perhaps middle-aged empty nesters looking to fill the void of those sudden schedule-free, empty evenings.

Whatever your customer profiles might look like, you need to tap into the ways in which you can identify with them and make their life easier and/or more fulfilled.

If your small business is a restaurant, for example, any one of those aforementioned profiles could be your client; however, each profile will look different.  For example, my children are no longer toddlers, but I do remember the anxiety I felt when taking my child to a restaurant.  I remember asking myself, will this restaurant have cups with lids, high chairs, disposable bibs, and crayons to keep them busy? Will there be an extra chair or a large booth for me to store the diaper bag?  Is the restaurant a relaxed atmosphere that won’t mind a crying toddler who didn’t like the way I cut up his chicken nuggets?  Does it have an atmosphere that is a bit noisy to slightly drown out my whiny child who’s learning how to behave in public? Or is the atmosphere one of more refined elegance where a private business meeting might take place?   If you know that the toddler mom who is lacking sleep and craving adult interaction is a match to one of your client profiles, ask yourself:  how is my social posts connecting with her?

How a customer’s profile helps your social media strategy, depends upon the relevance of your content.

Are you creating content that will identify with her needs and communicate to her that you are a family restaurant who is sympathetic to the tantrums of toddler hood?  Perhaps your content will have a clever edge, making her chuckle when she sees it, or will feature a Moms Monday Lunch Menu that changes weekly to encourage her to make weekly lunch plans with her friends or family.

Publish content that will help your clients tell their own story and the visibility of your posts will increase.

How? Because that toddler mom who is craving an afternoon lunch and adult conversation with her friend will likely share the post you created to the friend or friends she’s hoping to meet up with.  This could be through a private message, in a local group, by tagging her friend in the post on your business page, or sharing the post on her own timeline or her friend’s page.

As you review your small business’s clients and customers, don’t forget to create profiles of your best clients and the target audience you want your social posts to reach. This time-consuming task will pay off because you will be focused on creating content based around your client profiles, which will keep your social posts relevant to your audience. Over time, you will see a rise in engagement, awareness, and revenue.
